چکیده

Declarative learning, the ability to learn facts and concepts by experience and to adapt the declarative memory structures appropriately, forms the basis of human competencies. We argue that a viable architecture for declarative learning must be able to cope with novel information, and to demonstrate four core competencies knowledge comprehension, assimilation, utilisation and accommodation. The Contextual Memory System (CMS) is put forward as a model of declarative learning which satsifes these criteria, and illustrated in the domain of pure mathematics. No other cognitive architecture satisfies these criteria. A declarative learning capability provides an important constraint upon cognitive science modelling.

Psychometric Properties of the Persian Word Pairs Task for Declarative Memory Assessment

Objective: According to the declarative/procedural model, the semantic aspect of language depends on the brain structures responsible for declarative memory. The word pairs task is a common tool for evaluating declarative memory. The current study aimed to design a valid and reliable task for evaluating declarative memory in Persian children at learning and retention stages and to investigate i...

Memory and Contextual Change in Causal Learning

Declarative memory is a central resource for reasoning processes. In line with the ACT-R theory, we assume that declarative memory is the basis for causal learning. Based on this assumption we conducted an experiment, showing that subjects’ confidence in causal predictions decreased if their causal knowledge is discredited. Moreover, confidence decreased not only for the causal knowledge that w...

Propranolol–induced Impairment of Contextual Fear Memory Reconsolidation in Rats: A Similar Effect on Weak and Strong Recent and Remote Memories

Introduction: Previous studies have demonstrated that the &beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist propranolol impairs fear memory reconsolidation in experimental animals. There are experimental parameters such as the age and the strength of memory that can interact with pharmacological manipulations of memory reconsolidation. In this study, we investigated the ability of the age and the strength o...

Contributions of the medial temporal lobe to declarative memory retrieval: manipulating the amount of contextual retrieval.

We investigated how the hippocampus and its adjacent mediotemporal structures contribute to contextual and noncontextual declarative memory retrieval by manipulating the amount of contextual information across two levels of the same contextual dimension in a source memory task. A first analysis identified medial temporal lobe (MTL) substructures mediating either contextual or noncontextual retr...

Declarative to Procedural Tutors: A Family of Cognitive Architecture-Based Tutors

We have created a tutoring architecture, D2P (Declarative to Procedural), based on ACT-R’s theory of knowledge and learning for declarative and procedural memory. D2P also draws on general theories of learning and a recent review by Kim, Ritter, and Koubek (in press). D2P provides multimedia instruction pages followed by questions, video, and/or simulations to test and proceduralise the declara...
